Something you should know about me is that I tend to put off Very Important Things. You might be curious as to what qualifies as a Very Important Thing, so I’ve comprised a small list.
It’s pretty spectacular. I somehow managed to put off (approximately) thirty thousand Very Important Things this past week. I feel compelled to tell you about them (vaguely) so that you can learn from my failures. You’re welcome in advance. I recently had several project-length assignments due on the same day, which created an obvious problem. However, I did find out about all of these projects at least a week in advance. I even found out about the most time consuming assignment almost a month ago. The best part of all of this is that instead of taking the initiative to get any of it done early, or at least finish tiny parts of each project at different times, I thought to myself, “Wow, that’s rough that everything is due at the same time! Boy, that’s going to be a really stressful day!” I also had a pretty significant test I was “prepping for” (sleeping with my book open next to my head in an attempt to transfer the info using osmosis) “all week long” (midnight-5am the day of). So naturally, I put everything off until the day before they were all due. (What would you do? What would Jesus do? What would W.H. Auden do?) I’m pretty sure I woke up that day in a gasp. (Just know I was feeling the stress.) In an attempt to detach myself from any distractions, I went to the Market Square Starbucks. This was a bad idea as well (SHOCKER), and only serves as more proof of my wildly flawed judgment. As I was sitting in that coffee shop corner slumped dejectedly over my laptop, eyes half-open, limbs twitching from genuine lack of nutrients and sleep, I looked around at all of the busy humans with their busy lives, their flavor-pumped beverages in hand, and realized that I never wanted to feel that way again. I actually don’t think you could pay me money to relive this past week in any sense, even if it were just one hour of one of the days. I’m being completely serious. More built up, unavoidable tension existed in just one hour of one of those days than currently exists between all of North and South Korea. It is only by the sweet grace of Jesus in Heaven that I finished everything that I set out to accomplish that austere Friday morning. I have since adjusted my outlook on things like planning ahead to meet due dates and the effectiveness of homework completion in public coffee shop settings. Although this week has been a real kicker, I’m trying my absolute hardest to channel my inner 1992 Robert Smith, lipstick, oversized long sleeve T-shirt and all– it’s Friday, I’m in love.
